What's a Flood Bucket?
What if YOU were flooded out....
Finally, you get to come home to your flooded home. Filthy water has washed through your walls, your cabinets, your furniture. You have many responsibilities and getting this mess cleaned up and your life back in order is a priority. But what do you clean up with? All the items in your cabinets are ruined from the flood water, it's expensive to purchase new cleaning supplies, and the stores may be sold out of most items.
Down the street is a van with volunteers from the United Methodist Committee on Relief. They have come to hand out flood buckets, 5 gallon buckets packed with cleaning supplies, gloves, scrub brushes and other items you need. Instructions are included in using the buckets to gather and purify water if you need it. It's not a giant handout, but something you can use right now. It's free and timely relief from people who don't know you, but care enough to help you out in your time of distress.
Imagine how you might feel to receive one of these buckets in your time of need.
For many years the United Methodist Commitee on Relief (UMCOR) has provided flood buckets free of charge to people in need. Sometimes these buckets are the only way people can create drinking water, sometimes the buckets are the only thing they have to wash whatever belongings they have left. They make a huge difference to people in trying circumstances.
Over the years UMCOR has developed a list of required elements for the buckets, finding thru trial and error what works best and how to pack the buckets for the greatest good. All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into flood areas, it is important that kits contain only the requested items-nothing more.
Each bucket contains the following items:
5-gallon bucket with resealable lid
Bleach (two 1-quart or one 82 oz. bottles).
5 Scouring pads
7 Sponges
1 scrub brush
18 cleaning towels (reusable wipes)
Liquid laundry detergent (two 25 oz. or one 50 oz. bottle)
1 household cleaner, 12-16 oz. bottle
Disinfectant dish soap, 16-28 oz. bottle
50 clothes pins
Clothes line (two 50 ft. or one 100 ft.)
5 dust masks
2 pair latex gloves
1 pair work gloves
24-bag roll of heavy-duty trash bags, 33-45 gallon (remove roll from box before placing in bucket)
1 Insect repellant spray, 6-14 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have protective caps. See Special Requirements below.)
1 Air freshener, 8 or 9 oz. can (If aerosol, cans must have protective caps.)
All items included in kits must be NEW items.
Thank you for your donation- it helps sustain lives!
In response to a urgent request from the UMCOR depot in Sanger Brown Lousianna, Cross Plains First United Methodist Church will be gathering materials and assembling flood buckets to replenish those recently used in flooding throughout the United States. As Hurrican season approaches the supply of flood buckets is very low and UMCOR needs the assistance of communities and churches to restock and replace the supply so we can help the next group of people in need.
Thanks, in advance, for your contribution of supplies, time or money. You have the power, through your donation to help make the world a little kinder, and bless someone else with your gift.
